Intro:
Its the early 1880s and the American civil war has been concluded now for a few years, but not everything has settled down and there are still some stirrings with talk of an alliance between mexicans and former southern rebels.

The Small train of wagons moved through the high trees and came out on the rough dusty roads from time to time, as it moved south towards its destination, the crossed sabre emblem emblazoned on the white canvas either side of the covered wagons and the U.S Army monogram beneath. On each seat rode a driver, in the uniform of a U.S Army soldier, dressed in squared peaked cap, with the same emblem, yellow neckerchief and a pistol belt with covered holster at the waist, pale blue breeches with a light wide stripe down each leg and finally 3/4 calve length black boots, reins held in white gauntlets.
Sat next to them in similar uniform, was another Trooper, a rifle cradled in the crook of
their arm and 3 riders at the rear, 2 each side of the train and 2 up front, 1 of those being the officer in charge, a sabre at the waist hanging down and a single bar on each shoulder denoting the rank of Lieutenant.

Closer inspection would have revealed however, that this troop were in fact all women, which was not usual, but there were a small number of units appearing, as women had been forced to learn these skills, both during and after the war. The smart uniforms fit quite snugley to the more feminine form.
The  wagons had reached a wide clearing and the dark haired officer raised a gloved hand and yelled "HO" and the convoy stopped. "Sergeant we'll take a break here" she told a blonde woman with 3 stripes on her tunic sleeve, in a strong southern accent.

As the riders dismounted the Leiutenant Said " Ya'll check the disposition of the cargo now" and the soldiers began to pull back the rear covers. In the first covered wagon was contained 2 large boxes and various sized smaller boxes, these contained ammunition and weapons.
The officer moved to the second wagon and pulled back the cover.
" Well howdy Lieutenant and how are you enjoying the ride"
From inside the wagon pretty brunette Lieutenant Alice Belvedere stared contemptuously back, registering her protest through the tight cloth tied between her lips and behind teeth. She squirmed in her bonds, clad only in a figure hugging corset, garters and dark stockings, her hands bound tightly behind her ,shapely legs secured from ankle to thigh and more turns pinning both arms to her torso, from waist to shoulders.
Also in the wagon, chucked in rather unceremoniously, were half of her troop also clad in stockings and underclothes, equally tightly bound and gagged and propped against boxes marked U.S Army.

In the third wagon the same scene was being played out, as the remaining female troopers struggled futilely against their bonds, in underwear and stockings, mouths stuffed with the woollen socks they had worn in their boots, held by bandana's tied in mouths to muffle them.

"Thanks for the clothes girls" she drawled, as the fake troopers cheered and closed the covers back over.
A small tale of the west with a slightly different angle.

I've read this story quite a few times over the years, but for some reason it really stuck out to me this time that the fake Lieutenant refers to the real Lieutenant and her troopers as cargo when she orders one of the other imposters to "check the disposition of the cargo." How delightfully insulting and disrespectful! The real Lieutenant and her troops were once proud soldiers of the United States, but now they are bound, gagged, stripped, helpless... cargo. Perfect.
